Umami Kid: Authentic Anime-Themed Ramen & Japanese Cuisine in Saint John

People giving this place low stars need to relax a little bit. The service was a tad bit slow, but all of the employees were super nice. I can understand things were only a bit slow because they were super busy! They get big groups of people coming in and all their tables were FULL when we went. So I’m not so mad about that! It shows me this place is good haha. And since they just opened, they’re not going to be perfect. It’s not some big chain restaurant, so remember to give them some grace. The food was delicious, their broth was some of the best I’ve ever had. Cheesy gyoza was absolutely fire. The vibes there are amazing as well, I’m a huge anime fan, have been since I was a kid. So sitting in here was like a dream for me lol I would absolutely recommend this place. Just keep an open mind and heart as they are still learning! I’ll definitely be back :)

We had a reservation for the soft opening so I will concentrate on the food rather than a few hiccups that are attributed to "ironing out the wrinkles". We ordered Sweet & Spicy Edamame as an appetizer and the flavour of the sauce was good, not really spicy but still a good flavour. The beans themselves were okay but a little undercooked which made them chewy. My daughter ordered the Chicken Rice Bowl and dug into it before I could snap a picture as it smelled (and tasted) delicious. I ordered the Miso/Beef Ramen and it was amazing. Lots of veggies and beef and with a soft boiled, marinated egg that was so good that I regretted giving 1/2 to my daughter. we both agreed that it was the highlight of that dish. Not to say that it diminished the rest of the dish as the broth was exceptionally tasty. Over-all this was a good dining experience. Price wise the Chicken Rice Bowl at $12.99 was a great value, the Miso/Beef Ramen at $22.99 was a little higher than I thought but that egg made me forget how much the dish cost. The Sweet & Spicy Edamame was was well priced at $6.99 but could have been a little spicier and cooked a little longer. I gave 5 stars for the atmosphere, food and service as it was an overall great lunch with my daughter. They may not have hit 5 stars according to some but the effort was there and I fully expect things to only improve. Cannot wait to try this place again soon!

We dropped by for a quick lunch at Umami Kid to try out the Tan Tan Men (mildly spicy Ramen noodle soup for $22.99) and Beef Shoyu Miso Ramen (noodle soup for $22.99) both with straight noodles (if you want curly noodles add $3) and a deep fried mini octopus as an appetizer ($12.99) The octopus was delicious, albeit the portion was a bit smaller than we’d hoped. The bowls of ramen were a decent size; however the noodles itself weren’t as well made (stuck together). Great service and loved the atmosphere with the Anime walls and Sakura ceiling decor. With the price of ingredients soaring and the cost of starting a new restaurant, expect dining out to become higher and higher ($60+ for 2) Support local and international cuisine! Keep up the good work to the owners! It’s definitely not easy to run a business, but also learn and improve where possible!

Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling! As a huge fan of anime, Japan, Korea, and Asian culture in general, I couldn’t resist visiting this place. I’ve tried ramen in many restaurants, and since this one is right in my city, I knew I had to check it out. The atmosphere is incredible. The cherry blossoms and manga artwork make it feel like a small piece of Japan. It’s definitely a perfect spot for anime lovers who want to enjoy a good meal surrounded by familiar characters and colors. During my first visit, I really enjoyed my ramen, but the egg wasn’t fresh and was served cold, almost like it had just come from the fridge. I mentioned it kindly to my server because I truly believe feedback helps every restaurant grow. The gyozas were tasty, the broth was rich and flavorful, and even though it was during their opening period and the place was quite busy, the experience was very pleasant. I decided to return later to give them another chance, and I’m glad I did. The ramen tasted even better, and the overall quality had clearly improved. The only thing that still keeps me from giving it a 5 out of 5 is the egg, since it is a key element in ramen. Personally, I think it should be marinated in soy sauce instead of served plain, as it adds depth and balance to the dish. Overall, I’m giving this restaurant a solid 4 out of 5. It’s a fun and welcoming place for ramen and anime fans, with a unique vibe and great potential. I’ll definitely come back again.

First time visiting. I wasnt sure what to expect as this was my wife and my first Ramen Bar experience. I was delighted to learn that Umami Kid offered Octopus apps. To my knowledge, the only place in Saint John. The Fried Octopus Karaage was very good. I got Tori Karaage Paitan Ramen and my wife got Beef Miso Shoyu Ramen. Both were far beyond expectations. The egg was amazing, the chicken slapped me across the face with suprise. Insane flavors, amazing flavors. Will return for sure. Atmosphere was neat with Japanese comics on all the walls. Wait staff was super friendly and helpful.

Honestly loved this place , very lively, has soo many cute anime’s on the walls the food is good, great flavours, their drinks are really nice. The ice tea they brew themselves is amazingggg!!! The ambience was really good too, nice music in the background. Over all great place for hangouts and having a good time and good food. All chicken is halal. Since its newly opened and busy, u do have to call and make reservations.

Friendly and attentive staff make for great service. Visited with my partner and we both had the beef ramen, shrimp tempura and black sesame cheesecake. My partner and I both said we would rate it 8.5/10. The physical restaurant is relatively small, but the atmosphere was not loud or chaotic which I appreciated. If you love ramen or just a more unique eating experience in Saint John, you will love this place. This place would make an amazing cozy date spot come the cold weather! ⭐
